Location:
Probably named by illirian 'brentos' ( deer ), as the Greeks named the island 'Elaphusa' ( elaphos=deer in Greek), Brac is the biggest island in dalmatian archipelago. Plinius calls the island Brattia. It streches to 40 km in length and 12 km in width. From the mainland the island is separated by a sea channel of 6 to 13 km. Nearby is the island of Hvar, and Split on the mainland. One of the sunniest places on the Adriatic, the island has on average 134 sunny days per annum, or 2600 hours of sunshine.Nowhere else on the Adriatic coast there is such a prevalence of medieval churches and monasteries. The 16th century remains of then inhabited centers reveal the sophisticated knowledge of urbanism and architecture. The renaissance left the legacy of gorgeous churches, palaces and towers.
